Supporting Tourism in Northern Ontario

DRYDEN, Ontario — Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament for Kenora, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for FedNor, today announced a Government of Canada investment to help support community economic development and tourism growth in the Kenora region.

“This initiative will help raise awareness of cultural tourism attractions in the area, enhance collaboration among municipal partners and promote the region as a tourism destination,” said Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament for Kenora. “The project demonstrates how economic development and tourism stakeholders can work together to help diversify the regional economy and create jobs.”

“By helping municipalities develop interactive technology for today’s savvy travellers, the Government of Canada is helping community partners capitalize on the growing use of mobile applications in travel planning, enabling them to better compete in the global marketplace and attract more tourists to the area,” added MP Rickford.

The Dryden Development Corporation will use $166,384 in FedNor funding to develop an interactive, multi-media online and mobile tourism promotional tool to showcase tourism opportunities in Kenora, Dryden, Ignace, Sioux Lookout, Machin, Red Lake, Ear Falls and Atikokan.

“Thanks to FedNor support, communities can utilize Dryden’s GIS infrastructure to access the technology, and as a result, will be able to tap into new markets,” stated James Harvey, Economic Development Manager, Dryden Development Corporation. “This project will enable us to better promote our region, its cultural assets and create new jobs in the tourism sector.”

The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
